A Rolling Systainer Rack from 20×20 Aluminum Extrusion

Anyone with a stack of systainers knows the truth of it: the box you need is never the one on top. This user built a rack where every box is on top.

The rack is two bays of black 20×20 aluminum extrusion on heavy-duty casters, with a wood worktop across the top. Every slot has a Systainer³ Rail, so each box slides out and lifts off like a drawer, and the ones below it stay put. A track saw guide rail rides on each side.

I love systainers, just like your team! I’m gradually moving my older tools over to Festool, and for the tools and jigs that are worth keeping, I’m trying to standardize everything around systainers so I have one unified storage and organization system.

Systainer USA has built a couple of these from OpenBuilds rail, the SYS-Tower and the SYS-Rack, and that is where this user got the idea. This one adds the casters, so the whole rack rolls to wherever the work is in the garage.

You inspired me to build a systainer rack out of aluminum extrusion. For now, I just wanted to share a sneak peek of what I’ve built already: a rack to store systainers, with track saw rails on both sides.

Why extrusion

Aluminum extrusion is friendlier to work with than it looks. It cuts cleanly on a miter saw or a table saw with the right blade, and the catalog of joining plates, corner brackets and T-nuts means almost any frame can be bolted together without welding or drilling. The 20×20 profile is the same size used on the SYS-Rack, and it has held up fine there after months of use. The bay widths come straight from the Systainer³ Rail install sheet: 418 mm between the rails for a Systainer³ M and 530 mm for an L.
