Castle USA builds pocket cutting machines, and their whole argument is a routed pocket instead of a drilled one — a 3-degree low angle, cut with a router rather than a stepped bit, so the joint closes without the dimpling and the creep you get from a jig. The Castle 110 is the portable one: 15 inches tall, nine pounds, driven by whatever cordless drill you already own. Behind it on the stand sits the green TSM-12, the benchtop machine that does the same cut all day.

One systainer for the tool, one for everything it consumes

The pair on the table is the part worth copying. Both are anthracite with a carmine red catch and a matching red lid handle, both carry the Castle battlement mark in the left card slot, and they are labelled for what is inside: Castle 110 Pocket Cutter on one, Castle USA — Wood Plug and Screws on the other.

The consumables case is the more interesting of the two. Divider trays split the base into six compartments, and each one holds a species of wood plug — hickory, cherry, ash, red oak, maple, poplar — carded and labelled, with the screw boxes beside them. Pocket joinery generates a hole you have to fill, and the plug has to match the timber; sorting that on the job out of one lidded box is a great deal better than out of six bags.

Splitting a tool from its consumables across two cases only works because they are systainers. The two stack and lock together into one thing to carry, so the split costs you nothing on the way to the job — and once you are there, you can take the top one off and leave the rest in the van.

We have seen a Castle 110 in a systainer here before — as a customer’s own fitout, built on a base insert with blocking cut to fit.
